Lesson 3: History of Print: Evolution of the Penny Press Era

    Penny Press Era

Penny Press Era by Professor Fas

Penny press. ... Penny press newspapers were cheap, tabloid-style newspapers mass-produced in the United States from the 1830s onwards. Mass production of inexpensive newspapers became possible following the shift from hand-crafted to steam-powered printing.

The press is a monopoly controlled by the government.
The press is controlled by political parties.
The press resists the government by investing in commercial profitability of advertising to appeal a larger audience.

Joseph Pulitzer was the owner of the New York World.
William Randolph Hearst was the Owner of The New York Journal.
They were in competition with one another. However, the two wanted more adverts in the newspapers and we're more concerned about quant than quality. They wanted more readers despite the misleading headlines. This is known as Yellow Journalism.

    Yellow Journalism

It is the hyperbole form of journalism using misleading headlines, splashy pictures, and
    fake news.
